Theme: “The Philippine HIV Epidemic: Fast and Furious — How Fast is Fast?, How Furious is Furious?”
While HIV infections among the rest of the countries in the world are declining, the Philippines is one of only nine countries experiencing more than 25% prevalence of new HIV infections. Currently, we have a rate of 13 Filipinos newly infected with the virus everyday, and the count continues. The AIDS Society of the Philippines (ASP) invites you to their Scientific Meeting and General Assembly on Thursday, 17 October 2013 at BSA Twin Towers Condominium Hotel, Ortigas Center, Mandaluyong City. Our speakers are from the roster of experts currently working in HIV and AIDS. Describing the intensity and magnitude of HIV situation in the Philippines is DOH Assistant Secretary Eric Tayag. Dr Tayag will shed light on the theme of ASP’s scientific meeting. Our next speaker is the current USAID Reaching Out to Most-at-risk Populations (ROMP) Project Director Dr. Loreto “Boyet” Roquero, who will speak about the main drivers of the epidemic — MSM and PWID. He will elaborate why and what makes MSM and PWID at risk and vulnerable to HIV. Dr. Roquero will also present the current USAID ROMP project undertakings. ASP Vice President Dr. Rosario Jessica Tactacan -Abrenica will talk about the 2013 WHO revised clinical guidelines on ARV treatment. Dr. Abrenica will highlight the revisions made from previous WHO guidelines and furthermore speaks of implications on the Philippines setting. Finally, a scientific meeting will not be complete without the sharing and perspectives from the positive community. Pinoy Plus Association president Mr. Edu Razon and Ms. Elsa Chia of the Positive Action Foundation Philippines Inc. (PAFPI) have been invited.
A press conference/ press briefing is scheduled for this scientific meeting along with ASP General Assembly to be conducted in the afternoon.
